Using Busy Books for Neurodivergent Children, Autistic Children & Children with ADHD or ASD

Using Busy Books for Neurodivergent Children, Autistic Children & Children with ADHD or ASD

Neurodivergent children, autistic children and children with ADHD or ASD develop skills at a different rate than non-neurodivergent children. Even how they learn can be different, and they can experience challenges with social skills, processing information, sensory processing, communicating with others and other developmental delays. As a parent or teacher of neurodivergent children, autistic children and children with ADHD or ASD, this can often be challenging, but not if you have the right tools.

From our experience and the feedback we receive from parents and teachers, Busy Books can be very effective for helping neurodivergent children, autistic children and children with ADHD or ASD learn and develop. In fact, Busy Books are recommended and endorsed by speech pathologists, early childhood educators, occupational therapists and paediatric pathologists for their benefits for all children in general. This is some of what our customers have to say about how Busy Books have helped neurodivergent children, autistic children and children with ADHD or ASD

How Busy Books Can Help Neurodivergent Children, Autistic Children & Children with ADHD or ASD With Learning Delays

Fine motor skill problems.

Motor skills are important in life as they allow us to care for ourselves, holding objects, doing up buttons, running, keeping balance and more. This can be an issue for autistic people especially children who are experiencing delays. However, our customer, Max O’Loughland, said Busy Books have been able to help their 10 year old son who has been unable to hold a pen or pencil.

Thank you so much BUSY BOOKS!!!! My son Max is 10 years old and has Severe Intellectual Disability, Severe Autism and Global Development Delay. Max is not able to hold a pen or pencil and learning has always been difficult.

Max O’Loughlin

Busy Books use a range of activities so they can be used by children of varying development levels and abilities. While there are activities involving tracing, drawing or writing, there are also activities where children can speak, point or follow along a pattern with their finger. Alphabets, Numbers and Writing Skills is one such book with a variety of activities, meaning if your child has issues with holding a pencil, they can still get involved and hands-on with their development.

Speech development delays.

Speech delays or irregular speaking patterns are often one of the first signs parents notice in neurodivergent children, such as being nonverbal, slower to learn to speak, having difficulty starting conversations or having other language and communication developmental delays. These are some of the ways our customers have said Busy Books have helped with these type of delays:

Just really amazed how my son is making sounds now because of this book I never thought he could focus that long and even make out the sounds he loves the pig every time he sees the colour pink he oinks he loves matches the animals in their homes thank you again.

quickly thank you for helping my son achieve his milestones.

All Busy Books can help develop your child’s language and communication skills, but some are made specifically to help grow in this area. Starting With Sounds is a great book for autistic children as it focuses on sounds, and building up to words and phrases. For example, children will be asked to sound out a letter, and then different words with a range of syllables starting with that letter. This is good for helping form different sounds, rather than focusing on the whole word, which can be intimidating.

Nonverbal school preparation.

Starting school can feel especially overwhelming and overstimulating for neurodivergent children, autistic children and children with ADHD or ASD. While other children will already be developing social, communication and other developmental skills, children with autism may be further behind. They may also have different reactions, which can lead to meltdowns if they become overstimulated. However, Busy Books can help children learn some of those crucial skills, including learning emotions and following instructions.

Very impressed with the book I bought for my great nephew Eli, who was recently diagnosed with ASD. He is about to start kindy next year & is non verbal so thought this could help him get ready for school. Thanks for a great product.

My Body Mindfulness is a good book for children to learn about emotions, time management, and cause and effect. In the book, children can learn different emotions and the facial expressions that may indicate someone is feeling that way, as well as what can lead to feeling those emotions. For example, children will see different scenarios and have to match the emotion that the situation may evoke. You can also discuss these causes and effected emotions with them to help them learn what to do when they feel some of these emotions or when someone else is exhibiting these feelings.

Teaching aids.

When teaching neurodivergent children, autistic children and children with ADHD or ASD, you may need to take a different approach than with non-neurodivergent children. Busy Books can be a very useful tool in the classroom, giving children a hands-on and visual way to learn about different topics you’re already teaching, like math, English, communication and even the world.

I work at an early intervention centre for children with Autism. I purchased this busy book to use with my students in my sessions and it has been fantastic! I also love the extra set of matching icons as they do get damaged over time.

Communication skill building.

Neurodivergent children, autistic children and children with ADHD or ASD can find it difficult to start conversations, and are often known for asking less questions. This can hinder their learning and development, as they are less likely to ask for help or to make those interactions to make friends. With Busy Books, they can start to find their interests and want to learn more, leading to them asking questions.

We ordered this bundle a few weeks ago for my son who struggles with Autism, these books are a great way to engage him and get him to ask questions plus these types of activities are his favorite thing to do.

Building an interest in learning.

A common trait in neurodivergent children, autistic children and children with ADHD or ASD is having strong passions, interests or rituals. Not only can tapping into these interests help them learn and develop their skills, but it helps them feel proud of their knowledge and growth, and feel included when others are interested. They may even find these topics stress-relieving.

When I took these books into work the children became interested straight away. A child with autism throughly loved the alphabet book and enjoyed working through it page by page. Even now they will ask for the book and sit down at the table for a long time. The child has always had an interest in letters and numbers so this book was able to extend their knowledge and test their skills.
